The Guardian reports that Spain has dropped extradition proceedings against former Guantanamo detainees Jamil el-Banna and Omar Deghayes on the basis that they are not fit to stand trial.
I'm not going to comment on the case. What I find fascinating is that every time I see a photograph of Omar Deghayes in the press it's this one:
It's a very old picture but I imagine its use serves a purpose: it elicits the viewer's sympathy - "what a nice young man, how innocent, how harmless".
But, of course, Deghayes hasn't looked like that for quite some time (how could he, he's 38 years old). Here's a more recent photograph:
I'm not saying he looks guilty, I'm just saying he's not the cute, fresh-faced kid he used to be.
For some reason, the Guardian doesn't want you to know that.
