China has already overtaken the US as the world's "biggest polluter", a report to be published next month says. The report from the University of California also warns that rising Chinese emissions will dwarf any reductions made under the Kyoto Protocol.
The research suggests the country's greenhouse gas emissions have been underestimated, and probably passed those of the US in 2006-2007.
China has no obligations under Kyoto (other than monitoring and reporting emissions) and is unlikely to be sympathetic to calls for it to reduce its carbon output.
